Cartel Madras is a Calgary-based hip-hop sensation shaking things up across the city, country, and industry. Hailing from South India, sisters Contra and Eboshi are rappers now being hailed by fans and eager listeners-on as they develop varying narratives for coloured women and deliver them in explosive and captivating ways. Guaranteed to bring the party, their signature sound fuses the rap stylings of the South and trap and filters it through a strong female, though not necessarily feminine, voice.
Astral Swans is a human song-maker specializing in abstract narratives of lonerism, human frailty, and dread, all told with darkly comedic empathy and helpless concern. The project of Calgary experimental pop musician, Matthew Swann, Astral Swans is equally inspired by 60’s folk, no wave, and 90’s sludge. It is at once haunting, sincere, psychedelic, and strange.
Bitters is Edmonton’s newest three-piece. Well, that may or may not be true, but they are brand new and bring a new sound with them. The music is a collaboration between Emily Bachynski, Geoffrey Hamdon-O’Brien, and Elliot Thomas, who bring their eclectic influences together to create something original and refreshing. And that is exciting.
